John Biggers Tribute Mural
Overview
A monumental tribute to John Biggers — painter, sculptor, muralist, and the founding chair of Texas Southern University’s art department — this large-scale mural honors his transformative legacy in Houston’s African American arts community and his global influence on public and narrative art.
Concept & Design Approach
The design draws directly from Biggers’ own visual vocabulary — the angular compositions, the symbolic iconography rooted in West African and African American cultural forms, and the layered storytelling he pioneered across his career. The result is not imitation but homage: a contemporary work that speaks in dialogue with the master it celebrates.
