Concept & Design Approach

The design draws directly from Biggers’ own visual vocabulary — the angular compositions, the symbolic iconography rooted in West African and African American cultural forms, and the layered storytelling he pioneered across his career. The result is not imitation but homage: a contemporary work that speaks in dialogue with the master it celebrates.

Overview

Commissioned as part of a citywide parks initiative, Love Our Park was unveiled with Mayor Sylvester Turner in a public ceremony representing the City of Houston’s commitment to art as civic infrastructure.

Impact

The project represents a model for how civic art commissions can connect municipal institutions, community identity, and visual excellence. The mayoral unveiling established public visibility and institutional credibility at the highest level of city government.
